How it works
Arabic Phonetic Keyboard Layout uses the Windows built-in Language and Keyboard feature to introduce a new Keyboard for the Arabic (Saudi Arabia) Language. Once you run the installer and reboot, you will notice a new keyboard is added to the language list.
The keyboard Layout is created using Microsoft Keyboard Layout Creator.
You can download the Keyboard Layout file and customize it as you like.
How is it better than others?
Ipa Symbols List
It uses the research done by the Intellaren group to make most frequently pressed keys easily accessible through regular keys, without pressing Shift or AltGr (Ctrl+Alt).

- Step 1: Extract the zip file. Run the setup.exe file from the extracted folder, not from the zip file. Do not open the zip file and run the setup.exe from inside the zip file.
- Step 2: Reboot. Important, without this you don't always see the new Arabic Language and the keyboard appearing in next step.
- Step 3: You will see a new Language is added in the language bar. Select Arabic as the language and you are ready to type Arabic.
That's it, start typing.
If you are using Windows 8, then it is even easier. Just press Windows Key + Space to switch between languages and keyboards.
Note:
You might already have Arabic language installed. In that case, right click on the Language icon and click Settings.
Then on the settings diaglog, select the 'Arabic Phonetic Keyboard Layout' and click 'Move Up' to make it the first item under Arabic.
Step 1:Download the Arabic Phonetic Keyboard bundle as a zip file.
Step 2: Open the zip file. You will find a file named 'Arabic Phonetic.bundle'
Step 3: Copy the file.
Step 4: Press Command+Shift+G
Step 5: Put ~/Library/Keyboard Layouts
Step 6: Paste the file inside that folder.
Step 7: Now go to System Preference -> Keyboard -> Input Sources and add the Arabic Phonetic keyboard.
You can customize the Keyboard Layout by modifying the Ukelele file.
You need Ukelele software to modify it.
Tajweed Symbols are available through Ctrl+Alt combination or pressing the AltGr key (if you have it on your keyboard).
Hi Rylan,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
You're correct in assuming this may not be exactly the right place to post this question, but I sympathise with the difficulty you experienced in finding a 'right place.'
There are some IPA fonts available on the web for download, but many, if not all of the IPA symbols (eg. dʒ and ŋ ) can be found in the Unicode encoded fonts on your Mac.*
Most may not be available directly from the keyboard. To locate those that are, got to Syatem Preferences > International > Input menu and show the Keyboard Viewer. While you're there. check the box beside Character Palette to add it to the selection. And if you do not have US Extended selected as one of your keyboard choices, check the box beside this keyboard layout as well.* The Close the International pane to exit System Preferences.
If it's not already in the menu bar, these actions will add the Input menu toward the right end of your menu bar. It will appear as a small flag corresponding to your currently selected keyboard.
Keyboard viewer will show you the characters available directly from the keyboard, using the letter, symbol and number keys and using these keys and one or more of the modifier keys (shift, option, commant and ctrl).
Character Palette will show all of the characters available in the selected palette. You can drag and drop these characters from the palette into a word processor document.* Ŋ is character #406, ŋ is #407.
Regards,
Barry
*AppleWorks users note: AppleWorks cannot recognize or use characters using Unicode encoding, and characters ooutside the standard Roman set cannot be dragged into an AppleWorks document. Attempting to enter text using a Unicode keyboard layout will cause AppleWorks to immediately crash. You can have a Unicode layout listed in your input menu, and can use it with other applications, but you must use a Roman encoded KB layout with AppleWorks.
